(Sarasota, FL) Art Center Sarasota presents the third annual “iconcept jr” runway event, Sunday, September 23, noon to 2 p.m., at Art Center Sarasota, 707 N. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota. The event features a runway fashion show of outfits and accessories created from unconventional materials by artists and designers, ages 8-16. General admission tickets, which include a buffet lunch, are $50 for adults; $25 for youth under 16. VIP tickets are $75 and include reserved seating at the runway. Proceeds from ticket sales benefit Art Center Sarasota’s youth programs. To purchase tickets, visit www.artsarasota.org/iconceptjr2018 or call 941-365-2032.
According to Lisa Berger, director of Art Center Sarasota and the founder of the original “iconcept” runway event (which is celebrating its 11th year as one of the region’s most distinctive fundraisers), iconcept jr was developed to give these talented young designers a public event where they can express their fashion abilities and show them off. Berger says some of these young people attend Fashion Bootcamp at the center during the school year and summer where they learn how to create wearable fashions and accessories using recycled and repurposed materials, along with fabric. The students work directly with artists who are experienced in design and construction to learn firsthand. Along with skills in making clothing, the young designers develop creative thinking, problem-solving and boost their self-esteem.
“The Art Center’s mission is to provide opportunities for creative expression,” says Berger. “We believe that giving young people access to something they have passion for will help them throughout their lives. Most of these young designers will also wear their outfits in the runway show, adding self-confidence and stage presence to their skill set.” She adds that the young people and their parents are delighted to know that their efforts benefit the center’s youth art programs.
Sponsorship opportunities for the 2018 iconcept jr are still available. For more information on becoming a sponsor, call 941-365-2032 or email Lisa Berger at email@example.com.
About Art Center Sarasota
Art Center Sarasota was the first arts and cultural institution in Sarasota. It was founded in 1926 as the “Sarasota Art Association” by Marcia Rader, the art supervisor for the Sarasota County schools district. In the early years, the group met monthly and sponsored exhibits in rented facilities. The Association was incorporated as a not-for-profit organization in 1943 and has been in its current location in the Sarasota Bayfront Cultural District since 1949. Art Center Sarasota is now a membership-based organization that offers curated and juried exhibitions, adult and youth education programs, outreach initiatives for underserved youth, and culturally related public programming. Art Center Sarasota’s mission is to inspire individual creative expression, nurture artistic talent and provide the community with accessible and diverse visual art opportunities.
