Richard Rothbard, a New York-based artist and gallery owner, and his wife, Joanna Rothbard, took over management of the event (formerly the American Craft Show Sarasota) four years ago. Their firm, American Art Marketing, has produced annual fine art and crafts events in the northeast for more than 30 years, including the celebrated Berkshires Arts Festival. In New York City, they produce the Contemporary Art Fair, Art off the Main, and the American Fine Craft Show. This December, they are introducing the American Fine Craft Show at the Brooklyn Museum. The Rothbards also own An American Craftsman Galleries in New York City, Savannah, Georgia, and Stockbridge, Massachusetts.

Last year, the Sarasota Craft Show relocated to Robarts Arena (from the Sarasota-Bradenton International Convention Center), where it attracted more than 5,000 visitors. Building on that success, Rothbard and his team have been busy with the rigorous process of selecting the 125+ artists and artisans for the Sarasota show. Although most of the artists come from around the country, Rothbard says that he expects a larger percentage of regional artists this year.

“The Tampa Bay region is home to a wealth of first-rate artists and artisans,” he says. “The success of last year’s show has prompted dozens of artists from this area to apply for the 2013 event. They’ll be subject to the same rigorous jury system as the rest of the participants, but we’re confident that there will be a strong showing of regional artists.” He adds that interested artists should visit www.sarasotacraftshow.com to apply.
